Fighting the Florida Frizz

As spring quickly approaches, higher temperatures are in Florida’s near future–who are we kidding though, humidity is a byproduct of living in the sunshine state, so it’s important to understand how to get the most out of your hair on those humid Florida afternoons.

The effects of humidity on your hair:

Typically the hotter the temperature outside, the more moisture there is in the air, which causes humidity. Since hair is porous, or “sponge-like”, the strands absorb those water molecules, and as a result, causes frizz or flatness depending on your natural hair type and texture.

So what’s the best way to keep your sleek look or maintain volume throughout the day?

It’s all about the technique you use to dry your hair and what products you use to set your style.

To Prevent Frizz:

Thicker, curlier hair tends to get even curlier in humid climates, making straight styling harder to achieve due to the added moisture in the air, making your hair more prone to coiling as the hair shaft swells. To fight unwanted frizziness, we recommend:

  1. Microfiber towels when drying

Microfiber towels absorb more moisture. They are also softer on the hair shaft, preventing breakage and frizz that comes from rubbing the hair back and forth with a cotton towel.

  1. Try opting for your natural hair texture

Use styling products that will define and hydrate your curls and stay away from products that contain “bad” alcohols, which, despite drying the hair quickly, will create a crunchy, frizzy look. Our stylists suggest using Oribe’s Curl Control Silkening Crème or Curl Gloss to keep a controlled, healthy bounce to the hair throughout the day. Sebastian Pro Twisted curl magnifying cream is another great option to keep a flexible hold, as well as Super by RandCo BLEU.

  1. Use a lightweight heat-protecting spray or cream on wet hair before your blow-dry to target underlying frizz.

Not only will adding a heat protectant to your styling routine help minimize hair damage from your hot tools, but it also seals the hair, protecting it from soaking up extra moisture in the air. Here are a few products that our professional stylists love:

  • Oribe's Supershine Moisturizing Cream or Straight Away Smoothing Blowout Cream both provide conditioning anti-frizz benefits without the buildup or sticky residue.
  • RandCo BLEU Smooth & Seal spray is a great product to tame pesky fly-aways. You can also try their Hypersonic Heat Styling spray to make sure your hair is safe from excessive heat styling.
  • If you want heat protection with a little extra hold, try Sebastian Pro Trilliant or Mousse Forte.

Pro tip: Finish off your blowout with a flat-iron to further enhance and seal the hair.

  1. Oil out those ends

Applying argan based hair oil to wet or dry hair will help strengthen and condition your ends, and enhance shine. Our stylists love Oribe’s Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil to provide heat protection and frizz control to tame those tresses. Our stylists love using a small amount of good quality oil onto dry hair to lock in extra shine and frizz protection daily. Here are some of their faves:

    • Oribe’s Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil provides heat protection and frizz control to tame those tresses.
    • Create a sleek style with RandCo BLEU’s Optical Illusion Smoothing Oil megawatt gloss. This product has a high shine that smooths texture, tames flyaways, while adding separation.
    • Sebastian Pro Dark Oil with DiffusX technology is lightweight, non-greasy, and provides effortless smoothness to the hair.

To Prevent Flatness:

For those with fine, thinner strands, extra moisture in the air can actually weigh it down, making it more difficult to hold curls or beach waves, and can even make your hair look flat, limp, and dull. To bring life back into your hair:

  1. Use a volumizing spray

Volumizing sprays help lift the root and intentionally swell the hair shaft without added frizziness. Try using a spray like Oribe’s Volumista Mist or RandCo BLEU’s Magnifier Thickening Spray and apply to the root before your blowout to create natural, effortless volume and hold. For added volume and thickness, use Oribe’s Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse or Sebastian’s Pro Volupt to achieve big, yet soft and touchable hair.

  1. Structure spray goes a long way

A structure spray gives you the same memory and grip as a hairspray, but with a soft, malleable hold. Use Oribe’s Très Set Structure Spray, RandCo BLEU’s Highest Volumizing Mousse, or Sebastian Pro Mouse Forte to damp hair before styling to add body and movement to the hair while also providing heat protection.

  1. Try air-dried beach waves

If you want to avoid heat-styling, try creating a subtle beach wave to get that classic Florida look. Our stylists recommend:

Fighting the Florida Frizz 6

    • Oribe's Matte Waves Texture Lotion to define your natural hair texture.
    • R+Co Bleu Rose Water Wave Spray to create volume, texture, and lock in hydration.
    • Sebastian Pro Texture Maker or Shaper ID for a matte finish and medium hold.

If you’ve tried different hair products and want a longer lasting solution to combat frizz and dullness, the Brazilian Blowout treatment may be for you. Our stylists recommend this option if you want a customizable treatment to healthily maintain your hair pattern but get rid of 100% of unwanted frizz.
